Stop Oversea Medical Trips, Senate Urges Buhari, Approves N1.3 Billion Budget for Aso Rock Clinic

The Senate has urged Aso Rock Villa officials to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari patronizes the Aso Rock Clinic instead of travelling to Europe for medical attention.

The Senate made the call when State House officials appeared before the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs to defend the 2021 budget estimate of the state House.

The Aso Rock officials who were led by the Permanent Secretary, State House, Mr. Tijani Umar, stated that N1.3bn was proposed for the State House Clinic, out of the N19.7billion proposed budget for the State House in the 2021 fiscal year.

The Aso Rock Clinic receives humongous budget allocations annually without anything to show for it.

Reacting to the budget proposal, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Danjuma La’ah, said the committee would approve the budget for the State House Clinic. He, however, insisted that the President and other top officials of his government should no longer be flown abroad for medical treatment.

The rot at the Presidential Clinic was unearthed in October, 2017 when the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari berated the clinic for not having any medical equipment despite the huge allocations it has received over the years.

Explaining her frustration on realizing that the clinic was merely a clinic by name only, Aisha Buhari said:  “I called the Aso Clinic to find out if they have an X-Ray machine, they said it’s not working. In the end I had to go to a hospital owned and operated by foreigners 100 per cent.

“There is a budget for the Hospital and if you go there now, you will see a number of constructions going on but they don’t have a single syringe there. What is the purpose of the buildings if there are no equipment there to work with?

“You can imagine what happens across the states to governors wives if this will happen to me in Abuja.”

President Buhari spent nearly four months receiving treatment in Europe during his first tenure in office.

There has not been any evidence that any Nigerian ruler has ever been treated in the Aso Rock Clinic since it was built.

However, the Permanent Secretary, State House while speaking with journalist after the budget defence in the Senate on Thursday stated that the State House was doing everything possible to equip the hospital  to be able to attend to the President and other top staff of the Presidency.
