The Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has refuted claims making the rounds in social media that Federal Government released the sum of N700 million to each members of the House of Representatives as part of COVID-19 palliatives for their constituents.
The position of the Speaker stemmed from a motion of urgent public importance raised at plenary on Tuesday by the member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Henry Okon Achibong (PDP, Akwa Ibom) who drew the attention of the House to the “fake” information which according to the lawmaker was “intended to incite the public against the members of the House.”
According to Achibong, the information was deliberately put out there to engender and “attack or possibly kill members of the National Assembly.”
However, in his reaction, the Speaker stated that information “ was best ignored” as “It is beyond ridiculous and laughable.” Gbajabiamila concluded his reaction by categorically stating that “No money, not a kobo was given to any members for COVID-19 palliative.”
