Reps Member Urges FG to Honour Outstanding Nigerians Abroad

A member of the House of Representatives and the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub has called on the Federal Government to honour outstanding Nigerians who have brought accolades and honour to the country in foreign lands.

Yakub who represents Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency of Adamawa state in a statement he issued in Abuja earlier in the week enumerated list of Nigerians who has made the country proud in various ways as deserving of national recognition in other to encourage others to key in to the new renaissance while promoting the image of Nigeria and Nigerians abroad.

The lawmaker specifically mentioned Mr. Steve Ikenna Nweke, a Nigerian doctoral student in a Japanese university who voluntarily returned a wallet filled with money and other valuables he had picked in a restaurant. Hon. Yakub said that the action of the young scholar will a go a long way to improve the image of travelling Nigerians who are usually subjected to series of dehumanizing frisking in various airport outside Nigeria.

“Mr. Nweke, who is a Doctoral Degree student in a Japanese University, stumbled on what could be considered a fortune by many when he picked a wallet containing a lot of money, credit cards and personal materials at a Japanese eatery .

“As against what might be expected of anyone, especially those from the so- called third-world countries of the globe, Mr. Nweke had conscientiously returned the money and all that had come with it to a positively surprised Police team and had,to even greater surprise, additionally, refused any reward for his act of selflessness, which, ordinarily, would have made him lawfully richer by 10 Percent of the total money he had returned!

“To be sure that he knew what he was doing, the Police had asked Mr. Nweke what had informed his act of nobility and selflessness. The response of the young Nigerian scholar remains a lesson that is instructive to all Nigerians in our agenda and march towards the Nigeria of our dreams; a Nigeria that is admired and respected across the world and one whose citizens move across the great airports of Europe and the Americas freely without being subjected to the cumbersome body search and interrogations that we are daily tortured with in those airports,” Yakubu stated.

Speaking further, the lawmaker listed several other Nigerians who have in the recent past positively boosted the image of Nigeria and Nigerians outside the shores of Nigeria saying that the country must continue to encourage our citizens emulate good deeds that promote the image of the country.

He said: “we must, as a matter of constant efforts and re- enforcement, continue to let the world know that Nigeria possesses some of the best professionals in Medicine, Science and Technology, Academics and the Arts.  A few weeks ago, a young Nigerian graduate from the oldest Medical College in Russia not only became the Best Graduating Student for the year 2020,but broke a record of many decades by achieving a full GPA of 5.0. In almost the same week, we saw another young Nigerian woman who achieved an, equally, outstanding academic feat in the UK. Only two days ago, Nigerian- born Prof. Charles Egbu became the first black Professor to head a University in United Kingdom when he was named Vice- Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, London.”

Yakub, therefore called on “all Nigerians everywhere in the world to emulate this set of people by striving to align themselves with this new wave of social re- engineering among our citizens. In line with our new vision for global image-renewal and self- redemption, we must also make conscious efforts to sustain same in order to change the sad narrative of criminality and desperation for get- rich- quick results by which we are mostly and wrongly defined across the world.”

I’ve Spent N700 Million on Innoson Vehicles- Ifeanyi Ubah

Published

on

The lawmaker representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah has refuted claims that he stood against the purchase of Innoson vehicles by the Nigerian Senate, describing the report as “grossly misleading and fictitious narrative.”

Sen. Ubah in a statement he issued and personally signed on Sunday described himself as “the only individual with the largest units of Innoson vehicles in his fleet in the Southeast” wondered why people will sit in their rooms and concoct lies against others. Ubah said he was neither a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriation or Committee on Senate Services that could have afforded him the opportunity to be aware of the time the Senate planned to purchase vehicles for its members.

Ubah, however, assured his supporters and Igbo people at large that he was committed to the “think home” initiative which is primarily aimed at encouraging the establishment of businesses in Igboland as a way of boosting the economy of the region.

The lawmaker while enumerating his series of purchase of Innoson vehicles rvealed that to show the premium he places on Innoson vehicles he bought one the vehicles for his only daughter as a birthday present when she turned 18 years.

“Presently, I am the biggest private patronizer of Innoson vehicles in the South east today. The very first car that I gave my only beloved daughter when she clocked 18 years is an Innoson(IVM) vehicle which she still drives till date; the car is still parked in my Lagos residence currently. It is therefore ridiculous and laughable to insinuate that a man who bought his only daughter an Innoson vehicle would kick against procuring the same brand of vehicle for Senators.

“In my political engagements, I have purchased over 30 trailers of Innoson plastic products worth over 400million. I have also given out Innoson Vehicles to organizations such as; National Union of Journalists(NUJ) Southeast, Sports Writers Association Nigeria(SWAN), Catholic Boys Organization Nnewi Diocese, Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD), Nnewi Youths Forum and a host of friends and ardent supporters too numerous to mention.

“In line with my “think home” philosophy, I also purchased FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s official vehicles; 3 Coaster Buses, Trucks and SUV’s from Innoson. In total, I have spent over N700million in purchasing both vehicles and other products from Innoson from my personal pocket.

“Let me say without mincing words that in the entire Southeast, I am the only individual with the largest units of Innoson vehicles in his fleet. From the onset till date, I have maintained a very brotherly and cordial relationship with Chief (Dr.) Innocent Chukwuma; Chairman of Innoson Group whom I have always patronized and been at the forefront of promoting his brand. Therefore, I advise those trying to fan the embers of discord between two brothers to desist from such as it is a failed ploy that is obviously dead on arrival.

Ubah also revealed that he was aware that his ambition to participate in the governorship election in Anambra state in 2021 was making his opponents jittery which he believes was fueling such lies as the present one against him. He, however, noted that each time such lies are told about him it rather boosts his popularity as it further affords the people the opportunity to know him better.

“I am fully aware that a lot of people are jittery about my rising political profile ahead of the 2021 Anambra Gubernatorial elections, hence the deployment of malicious pseudo writers to peddle falsehoods and twisted conjectures about me in a bid to deplete the love and goodwill my people have for me. However, these malicious stories have turned out to become a step tool that consistently promotes my brand,” Ubah stated.

#EndRape Protesters Storm Otukpo, say 8 Cases Recorded in 1 week

Published

No fewer than 40 civil society groups, on Tuesday, converged on Otukpo, Benue State in an awareness rally to end the scourge of RAPE in the community.

The group, which staged a peaceful protest under the aegis of Benue Coalition Against Rape, (BeCare), lamented that the area had recorded 8 new rape cases in the last one week, describing the development as worrisome.

Convener of the coalition, Prince Yemi Itodo, while addressing the gathering said the match was to create awareness about the dangers of rape and the need to put an end to the menace.

“This rally is aimed at speaking to the conscience of those who take pleasure in raping our women and to tell them its time to turn a new leaf.

“In the last one week, about 8 helpless girls were raped across various local government areas in Benue South, with only 3 suspects in police net”, Itodo lamented.

He specifically mentioned the case of Ene and Dorcas in Otukpo; Maria and one other victim in Okpokwu and little girl that was raped inside the church in Orokam, Ogbadibo LGA, calling on the security agents to bring the suspects to book.

On her part, the Managing Director of Joy FM Otukpo Amb. Christabel Iyanya said the psychological trauma victims of rape go through should be enough reasons to end the menace.

“Just imagine the short and long term effect of the trauma, and trying to get them out of the trauma is always a big challenge.

“We want to appeal to mothers, please bring up your children in the fear of God and when they grow up they will not depart from it. That is the easiest way to permanently address the menace,” she said.

Founder of Restorer of Paths Care Foundation, and caregiver of a deceased rape victim, the late Ochanya Ogbanje, Evangelist Enuwa Soo decried the rising cases of rape in the Benue south district stressing that the protest would help create awareness about the dangers of rape in the district.

The protesters who bore placards with inscriptions such as, “we want strict law against rape”, “say no to rape”, “all rapists must face the law”, “justice for rape victims in Benue”, etc, were mainly women, girls and boys, representing various organizations, including People Living with Disabilities (PWDs).

One of the PWDs, Mary Ejeh, who spoke to journalists, said they were the worst hit of rape, adding that, herself and others have been sexually molested by some male in the society.

The group matched through the town to the Otukpo Area Police Command; the Och’Idoma Square; Otukpo local government council secretariat and the palace of the first class chief, Otukpo/Ohimini; where everyone condemned the act and invoked the spirit of ALEKWU (gods of Idoma land) on perpetrators of RAPE.
